BBC Live Brief - Best Market

The next animation footage I worked on was Best Market:

As you can see from the still in the original footage we made use of a large green screen for this animated short. I made it my first task to remove this screen but it proved to be very difficult and time consuming. However I learnt a lot more about advanced keying techniques, using masks and duplicating layers to overcome keying problems.

The first problem I had was that the broccoli in the shot was a very similar shade of green to the screen. So when I attempted to key out the screen some parts of the broccoli were also removed:

Also parts of the scales were removed as they had a green reflection on the metallic parts:

I finally found a way to fix this by duplicating the whole video layer and masking out the broccoli and the scales with the pen tool on the duplicate. I then set the mask to add so it would fill in the gaps on the keyed out original layer. This completely removed all the holes and cut offs and left me with what I wanted:

I then used a royalty free video of people at a market for the background to enhance the atmosphere and mood of the shot:

Finally I made the colours fit the lighting of the background as if they were illuminated by natural light and not artificial light:

I learnt a lot more about green screen keying from working on this footage and solved ways to get around problem areas and badly lit green screen footage. This could help me greatly when working on future projects. Although it would have been easier when shooting the animation to have a well-lit green screen so avoid these problems all together. I felt as though I’ve learned much from my mistakes and now I have a much broader understanding of this working process.
